Vol: 45, No.3 3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENT ( B) December 17 2017

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is near.
(Phil 4:4-5)
PENITENTIAL RITE
“I am the light of the world” is one of the “I am” sayings of Jesus in John’s Gospel. Jesus continues to say that anyone who follows him will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life. Today’s gospel also brings in John the Baptist. His role is to bear witness to the light and lead the people to Jesus who is the light of the World. When questioned, John further explains that his mission is to prepare the way of the Lord. On this third Sunday of advent we have several themes to ponder: God works for the benefit of his people by sending John the Baptist. John prepares the people to accept Jesus as their light. Jesus, the light, guides the people out of darkness. Do I prefer Light? Am I still groping in darkness? (Pause)
I Confess to almighty God/and to you,/my brothers and sisters,/that I have greatly sinned,/in my thoughts and in my words,/in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,/through my fault,/through my fault,/through my most grievous fault;/therefore I ask blessed Mary ever Virgin,/all the Angels and Saints,/and you,/my brothers and sisters,/to pray for me to the Lord our God.

COLLECT
O God, who see how your people faithfully await the feast of the Lord’s

Nativity, enable us, we pray, to attain the joys of so great a salvation and to celebrate them always with solemn worship and glad rejoicing. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
FIRST READING
(This reading from Isaiah has two parts. The first part is the song of the Lord’s Anointed. The second part depicts the nuptial joy of Zion clothed with salvation and righteousness).
A reading from the Book of Isaiah
(61:1-2a, 10-11)
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour, and the day of vengeance of our God.
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.
