ENTRANCE ANTIPHON
See, I have God for my help. The Lord sustains my soul, I will sacrifice to you with willing heart, and praise your name, O Lord, for it is good. (Ps 54:4, 6)
PENITENTIAL RITE
When the leaders of the people, metaphorically called "shepherds", fail in their duties the people lose direction. In Israel the kings had the duty of shepherding the people but only a handful of kings did their shepherding duty well while the rest failed miserably. David was one of the kings who did what was right and as a reward God promised that the Messiah would come from his descendants. The Messiah king did come in the person of Jesus. Jesus found the plight of the people miserable, and he set out to minister to them with compassion. So much so that Jesus and his disciples had no time for leisure because the people were always on the look out for Jesus. Why do we look for Jesus? Do we really find him? (Pause)
I Confess to almighty God/and to you,/ my brothers and sisters,/ that I have greatly sinned,/ in my thoughts and in my words,/ in what I have done/and in what I have failed to do,/ through my fault,/ through my fault,/ through my most grievous fault;/ therefore I ask blessed Mary ever Virgin,/ all the Angels and Saints,/ and you, my brothers and sisters,/ to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Glory to God...

A reading from the Book of Jeremiah
(23:1-6)

"Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!" says the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for my people: "You have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord. Then I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, says the Lord.
"Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute
