Vol: 45, No.60 CHRIST, THE UNIVERSAL KING ( B) November 25 2018
from the dead and to be established as the King of the universe).
A reading from the Book of the Apocalypse (1:5-8)
Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, every one who pierced him; and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.
The Word of the Lord
Alleluia! alleluia! Blessings on him who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessings on the coming kingdom of our father David! Alleluia! (Mk 11:9-10)
(Jesus is indeed King, but his is a spiritual kingdom based on truth and justice. Those who stand for truth are his subjects).
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St John (18:33b-37)
Pilate said to Jesus, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me; what have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingship is not of this world; if my kingship were of this world, my servants would fight, that I might not be handed over to the Jews; but my kingship is not from the world.” Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come
into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.”
The Gospel of the Lord
I believe in God,/the Father almighty,/ Creator of heaven and earth,/ and in Jesus Christ,/his only Son,/ our Lord,/ who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,/born of the Virgin Mary,/suffered under Pontius Pilate,/was crucified,/died and was buried;/he descended into hell;/on the third day he rose again from the dead;/he ascended into heaven,/and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;/from there he will come to judge the living and the dead./I believe in the Holy Spirit,/the holy catholic Church,/the communion of saints,/the forgiveness of sins,/the resurrection of the body,/and life everlasting. Amen.
Cel: Dear brothers and sisters, on this last Sunday of the liturgical year as we celebrate the feast of Christ the King let us place our petitions before our Lord and King. When Pilate repeatedly asked if Jesus was King he accepted the title but affirmed that he was the King of Truth. That we too may stand for truth, let us pray, saying,
Response: Lord, may your kingdom come.
1. Jesus is the King of Truth, let us pray that all untruthfulness and insincerity may be removed from human hearts, we pray ...R/
2. Jesus is the King of righteousness, let us pray that we too may stand for justice where everyone is respected and no innocent person is unjustly punished, we pray ...R/
3. Jesus is the King without an army, without soldiers to fight for him and without opulent palaces. Let us pray that rich kingdoms and nations may care for the poor and the underprivileged, we pray ...R/
