were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen by race. They are Israelites, and to them belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed for ever. Amen.

(Peter was given the power to walk over the water while his faith in Christ lasted. Frightened by the waves, when his faith faltered, he began to sink).
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St Matthew (14:22-33)
Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying “it is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. But immediately he spoke to them, saying, “Take heart, it is I; have no fear.”
And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, “O man of little faith, why did you doubt”?
And when they got into the boat, the
wind ceased. And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
The Gospel of the Lord
I believe in God,/the Father almighty,/ Creator of heaven and earth,/ and in Jesus Christ,/his only Son,/our Lord,/who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,/born of the Virgin Mary,/suffered under Pontius Pilate,/was crucified,/died and was buried;/he descended into hell;/on the third day he rose again from the dead;/he ascended into heaven,/and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;/from there he will come to judge the living and the dead./I believe in the Holy Spirit,/the holy catholic Church,/the communion of saints,/the forgiveness of sins,/the resurrection of the body,/and life everlasting. Amen.
Cel: Dear brothers and sisters, God revealed himself to Prophet Elijah in the whisper of a gentle breeze. With the prophet let us also experience the God of silence, of tenderness, of sweetness, and place before him all our needs, saying,
Response: Lord, hear our prayer.
1. Lord, today you teach us that you are not only a God of power and might but also and above all you are a Father of tenderness, love and sweetness. Grant us the grace to be open, humble, tolerant and discrete in all our dealings with our brothers and sisters, we pray… R/
2. Lord, help us to realize that immediate judgement, condemnation and punishment are not in your style. You instead are patient and forbearing towards those who stray from your path. Help us to be patient and tolerant towards those who disagree with us and differ from us in ideas, opinions and lifestyles, we pray… R/
3. Father, endow our Pope, bishops and all our spiritual leaders with your gentleness, patience and tolerance that they may learn to be tolerant of dissent and patient and forbearing towards those who err, we pray… R/
