Vol: 46, No.43 18TH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR ( C) August 04 2019
O God, come to my assistance; O Lord, make haste to help me! You are my rescuer, my help; O Lord, do not delay. (Ps 69:2, 6)
The main thrust of Jesus’ mission is to establish the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God is a spiritual reality. Though not opposed to the world, certain values of the kingdom of God stand in opposition to the values of the world. Certainly, greed, covetousness and self-centredness are opposed to the kingdom values. The man who approached Jesus with the demand of dividing property was not happy with the property he inherited. Inheritance laws were already in place but very often they were overlooked. The rich man is overly self-oriented. He does not want to share his wealth with the have-nots. This attitude is contrary to the values of the kingdom as are other things that Paul enumerates, such as immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire and covetousness. Are our values in conformity with the kingdom values? Do we earnestly desire to be part of God’s kingdom? (Pause)
I confess to almighty God/and to you,/my brothers and sisters,/that I have greatly sinned,/in my thoughts and in my words,/in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,/through my fault,/through my fault,/through my most grievous fault;/therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,/all the Angels and Saints,/and you,/my brothers and sisters,/to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Glory to God in the highest...
Draw near to your servants, O Lord, and answer their prayers with unceasing kindness, that, for those who glory in you as their Creator and guide, you may restore what you have created and keep safe what you have restored. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
(In his characteristic style, the author says that everything is vanity for he considers it an injustice if the profit of a person’s hard work goes to another who has done nothing to deserve it).
A reading from the Book of Ecclesiastes (1:2; 2:21-23)
Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. Sometimes a man who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave all to be enjoyed by a man who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. What has a man from all the toil and strain with which he toils beneath the sun? For all his days are full of pain, and his work is a vexation; even in the night his mind does not rest. This also is vanity.
