The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
He fed them with the finest wheat and satisfied them with honey from the rock. (Ps 80:17)
Jesus is the Holy Son of God. Coming of people to him in large numbers to listen to him and be cured of illnesses is an expected human behaviour. But in the primitive conditions of the 1st century CE in a lonely place providing them food is unexpected. The multiplication of the bread is a foretaste of the Eucharist. “And taking the five loaves he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.” Jesus nourishes us with his body and blood. For this he established the Eucharist on the night before he died. Jesus offers himself in the form of bread and wine that we bring to the altar. The Eucharist becomes the most important form of worship in the Church, and today we celebrate the feast of the corpus Christ (Body of Christ). Do we draw nourishment and strength from the Eucharist? Do we frequent it with devotion and attention? (Pause)
I confess to almighty God/and to you,/my brothers and sisters,/that I have greatly sinned,/in my thoughts and in my words,/in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,/through my fault,/through my fault,/through my most grievous fault;/therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,/all the Angels and Saints,/and you,/my brothers and sisters,/to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Glory to God in the highest...
O God, who in this wonderful Sacrament have left us a memorial of your Passion, grant us, we pray, so to revere the sacred mysteries of your Body and Blood that we may always experience in ourselves the fruits of your redemption. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
(Melchizedek, priest and king of Salem, blesses Abraham in the name of God the Most High. Abraham in return offers him tithes).
A reading from the Book of Genesis (14:18-20)
Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was a priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, maker of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
