Vol: 46, No.34 THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD ( C) June 02 2019
(World Communications Day)
Men of Galilee, why gaze in wonder at the heavens? This Jesus whom you saw ascending into heaven will return as you saw him go, alleluia. (Acts 1:11)
Today we celebrate the feast of the Ascension. The feast of the Ascension recalls the glorious return of the Lord Jesus back to his Father. Luke writes, “Jesus led the disciples as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven.” Of course, Luke also knows another tradition according to which the Ascension took place forty days after the resurrection during which Jesus appeared to his disciples strengthening their faith and promising them the gift of the Holy Spirit. After receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit the disciples went around preaching the Good News. How do we participate in the mission that Jesus has given us? (Pause)
I confess to almighty God/and to you,/my brothers and sisters,/that I have greatly sinned,/in my thoughts and in my words,/in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,/through my fault,/through my fault,/through my most grievous fault;/therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,/all the Angels and Saints,/and you,/my brothers and sisters,/to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Glory to God in the highest...
Gladden us with holy joys, almighty God, and make us rejoice with
devout thanksgiving, for the Ascension of Christ your Son is our exaltation, and, where the Head has gone before in glory, the Body is called to follow in hope. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
(Luke in Acts presents the Ascension as taking place on the fortieth day after the resurrection. During this time Jesus appears to the disciples and strengthens their faith).
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (1:1-11)
In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “You heard from me, for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses
