Vol: 46, No.23 5TH SUNDAY OF LENT ( C) April 07 2019
Give me justice, O God, and plead my cause against a nation that is faithless. From the deceitful and cunning rescue me, for you, O God, are my strength. (Ps42:1-2)
“Let him who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” These words of Jesus addressed to the accusers of the woman purported to have been caught in the act of committing adultery settles the issue. The men threatening to lynch the woman by throwing stones at her do throw the stones, not at the woman, but at themselves. They go away in shame because they realize that they are not without sin. While having a plank in our eyes we cannot point a finger at a person who has only a speck in his eyes. Removing the obstacles from our own lives is the only way at fruitful living. The Scribes and the Pharisees who think they can trap Jesus get entrapped themselves. Do we show haste in judging others? What are our criteria for judging our neighbour? (Pause)

I confess to almighty God/and to you,/my brothers and sisters,/that I have greatly sinned,/in my thoughts and in my words,/in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,/through my fault,/through my fault,/through my most grievous fault;/therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,/all the Angels and Saints,/and you,/my brothers and sisters,/to pray for me to the Lord our God.

By your help, we beseech you, Lord our God, may we walk eagerly in that same charity with which, out of love for the world, your Son handed
himself over to death. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
(The people driven out of their homeland and deported to Babylon are in great despair. Isaiah assures them that God is planning something new for them).
A reading from the Book of Isaiah (43:16-21)
Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, who brings forth chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The wild beasts will honour me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.”

Response: What marvels the Lord worked for us! Indeed we were glad.
When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. R/
The heathens themselves said: “What marvels the Lord worked for them!” What marvels the Lord worked for us! Indeed we were glad. R/
