Forsake me not, O Lord, my God; be not far from me! Make haste and come to my help, O Lord, my strong salvation! (Ps 37:22-23)
Moses was the great Leader who brought the people of Israel from their slavery in Egypt to the threshold of entry into the Promised Land. Moses was leader for a long time and has gone through the agony and ecstasy of leading the people during their wilderness wandering when people rebelled on various occasions. Now as he bids farewell to the people whom he has led Moses urges his people to love God with all their being. Jesus who came as the shepherd of Israel, lays the same condition for eternal life, but has added one more which is love of neighbour. If we do these we are also not far from the kingdom of God. Do we take the kingdom of God seriously? Do we love God and neighbour without attaching conditions? (Pause)

I Confess to almighty God/and to you,/ my brothers and sisters,/ that I have greatly sinned,/ in my thoughts and in my words,/ in what I have done/and in what I have failed to do,/ through my fault,/ through my fault,/ through my most grievous fault;/ therefore I ask blessed Mary ever Virgin,/ all the Angels and Saints,/ and you, my brothers and sisters,/ to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Glory to God...

Almighty and merciful God, by whose gift your faithful offer you right and praiseworthy service, grant we pray, that we may hasten without stumbling to receive the things you have promised. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
(This passage from Deuteronomy contains the prayer of the Jews popularly known as the Shema which means “hear”. The central ideas of Judaism are compressed in this prayer).
A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy (6:2-6)
Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life; and that your days may be prolonged. Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them; that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words which I commanded you this day shall be upon your heart.”
