Vol: 45, No.12 4TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME ( B) January 28 2018
Save us, Lord our God! And gather us from the nations, to give thanks to your holy name, and make it our glory to praise you. (Ps 106:47)
Contrasting realities always exist side by side, such as truth and falsehood, light and darkness, goodness and wickedness, angels and devils. It is understandable that Jesus the Son of God would come face to face with the demonic spirits because Jesus is the embodiment of goodness, while the devil is exactly the opposite. During Jesus’ wilderness experience he lets the devil tempt him but when he returns to his hometown he straightaway expels the devil from a man. Jesus may let the devil to probe him, but he will not permit him to destroy a human life. In a dramatic display of power Jesus expels the devils and frees the man. What is my attitude to Jesus? Do we believe that Jesus has the power to destroy all evil? (Pause)
I Confess to almighty God/and to you,/ my brothers and sisters,/ that I have greatly sinned,/ in my thoughts and in my words,/ in what I have done/and in what I have failed to do,/ through my fault,/ through my fault,/ through my most grievous fault;/ therefore I ask blessed Mary ever Virgin,/ all the Angels and Saints,/ and you, my brothers and sisters,/ to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Glory to God ...
Grant us, O Lord our God, that we may honour you with all our mind, and love everyone in truth of heart. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, you Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
(Moses tells the people that after his death God will raise a prophet like him who will lead them. The Jewish expectation of a prophet like Moses as their Messiah comes from this passage).
A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy (18:15-20)
Moses said to the people, “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brethren – him you shall heed – just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, or see this great fire any more, lest I die’. And the Lord said to me, ‘They have rightly said all that they have spoken. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brethren; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And whoever will not give heed to my words which he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him. But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die’.”
