Vol: 45, No.11 3RD SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME ( B) January 21 2018
O sing a new song to the Lord, sing to the Lord, all the earth. In his presence are majesty and splendour, strength and honour in his holy place. (Ps 96:1, 6)
The story of Jonah as told in the book of Jonah is a fascinating tale. When told to go and preach to the people of Nineveh Jonah’s response is to run away from God. According to Jonah Nineveh has been an evil city and its inhabitants do not deserve God’s mercy, instead, he desires the total destruction of the people. But the Word of God is irresistible; and so Jonah can do nothing other than to be obedient when God speaks to him again. When he preaches, the Ninevites repent and God in his turn saves the city. The gospel of today shows Jesus beginning his ministry by choosing his disciples. The chosen disciples will continue his mission when Jesus is no more with them. As disciples of Jesus chosen and empowered with his Spirit, what is our contribution towards the advancement of the gospel? (Pause)
I Confess to almighty God/and to you,/ my brothers and sisters,/ that I have greatly sinned,/ in my thoughts and in my words,/ in what I have done/and in what I have failed to do,/ through my fault,/ through my fault,/ through my most grievous fault;/ therefore I ask blessed Mary ever Virgin,/ all the Angels and Saints,/ and you, my brothers and sisters,/ to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Glory to God ...
Almighty ever-living God, direct our actions according to your good pleasure, that in the name of your beloved Son we may abound in good works. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns....
(At the preaching of Jonah the king and the people of Nineveh believe God and repent. God is extremely pleased with the exemplary behaviour of the people)
A reading from the Book of Jonah (3:1-5, 10)
The word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days journey in breadth. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he cried, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and put on sack cloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.
When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God repented of the evil which he had said he would do to them; and he did not do it.
