Vol: 45, No.10 2ND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME ( B) January 14 2018
All the earth shall bow down before you, O God, and shall sing to you, shall sing to your name, O Most High! (Ps 66:4)
Samuel cannot be at fault for not recognizing the voice that called him as he was sleeping in the temple where the Ark of God was. He had not yet known the Lord and had not received his messages. But the boy was alert even at the wee hours of the night when deep sleep engulfs everyone. When he heard the voice, Samuel ran to Eli, who was like a father to him. Samuel eventually became one of the most influential figures in Israel because he responded to God’s call. Andrew was convinced of his call when Jesus invited him to stay with him and immediately brought Simon his brother to Jesus. At the very first meeting Jesus understood the qualities in Simon and called him Peter which means rock. What is my response when the Lord calls me? Am I alert to the callings that come to me? (Pause)
I Confess to almighty God/and to you,/ my brothers and sisters,/ that I have greatly sinned,/ in my thoughts and in my words,/ in what I have done/and in what I have failed to do,/ through my fault,/ through my fault,/ through my most grievous fault;/ therefore I ask blessed Mary ever Virgin,/ all the Angels and Saints,/ and you, my brothers and sisters,/ to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Glory to God ...
Almighty ever-living God, who govern all things, both in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the pleading of your people and bestow your peace on our times. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns....
(Samuel is sleeping in the Temple near the Ark of God. When God calls him, Samuel responds by saying, ‘Speak Lord, your servant is listening’).
A reading from the First Book of Samuel (3:3a-10, 19)
The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down within the temple of the Lord, where the Ark of God was. Then the Lord called, “Samuel! Samuel!” and he said, “Here I am!” and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. And the Lord called again, “Samuel!” And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘speak, Lord, for thy servant hears’.” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
