Vol: 44, No.56 31ST SUNDAY OF THE YEAR ( A) November 05 2017
Forsake me not, O Lord, my God; be not far from me! Make haste and come to my help, O Lord, my strong starvation!
The lifestyle and behaviour of the priestly class at the time of Jesus was very much the same as when Malachi was prophet about five hundred years before the coming of Jesus. Malachi had used strong words against the behaviour of the priests who caused the people to stumble and fall. The words of Jesus addressed to the Scribes and the Pharisees are equally forceful: they seek attention from the people at all coasts. To change this situation the healing and loving presence of God manifested through the ministry of Jesus became necessary. The apostle Paul and his companions were able to emulate the compassionate care of Jesus as they carried out their mission in Thessalonica. What attitude do we project in our interaction with our fellow human beings? Can we become more gentle and caring? (Pause)
I confess to almighty God/and to you,/my brothers and sisters,/that I have greatly sinned,/in my thoughts and in my words,/in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,/through my fault,/through my fault,/through my most grievous fault;/therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,/all the Angels and Saints,/and you,/my brothers and sisters,/to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Almighty and merciful God, by whose gift your faithful offer you right and praiseworthy service, grant, we pray, that we may hasten without stumbling to receive the things you have promised. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you…
(Instead of giving the honour and fear due to God as Father and Master, the priests despise God’s holy name and cause the people to stumble by their teaching).
A Reading from the Book of Malachi (1:14–2:2, 8-10)
I am a great King, says the Lord of host; and my name is feared among the Nations. “And now, O priests, this command is for you. If yo will not listen, if you will not lay it to heart to give glory to my name, says the Lord of hosts, then I will send the curse upon you. You have turned aside from the way; you have caused many to stumble by your instruction; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the Lord of hosts, and so I make you despised and abased before all the people, inasmuch as you have not kept my ways but have shown partiality in your instruction.”
Have we not all one father? Has not one God created us? Why then are we faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our fathers?
