Vol: 44, No.54 29TH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR ( A) October 22 2017
To you I call for you will surely heed me, O God; turn your ear to me; hear my words. Guard me as the apple of your eye; in the shadow of your wings protect me. (Ps 16:6-8)
When a crime is committed its gravity is assessed by probing into the intention of the criminal. If it is a premeditated act, then it is a grave crime and the punishment is harsher. The Pharisees who came to Jesus came with the precise aim of trapping him. Seeking the company of the Herodians whom they otherwise hated to execute their plan shows their hypocrisy. But Jesus did not give in to the malicious intent of the Pharisees and confronted them on their own terms. The answer of Jesus that they should give to Caesar what belongs to him and give to God what belongs to God was beyond their grasp. They accepted defeat. Jesus called them hypocrites because they were totally insincere and deceitful in their intent. Hypocrisy is a grave offence against God who is all truth. Do I use double standards in my dealing with others? (Pause)
I confess to almighty God/and to you,/my brothers and sisters,/that I have greatly sinned,/in my thoughts and in my words,/in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,/through my fault,/through my fault,/through my most grievous fault;/therefore I ask blessed
Mary ever-Virgin,/all the Angels and Saints,/and you,/my brothers and sisters,/to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Glory to God in the highest…
Almighty ever-living God, grant that we may always conform our will to yours and serve your majesty in sincerity of heart. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
(The Persian King Cyrus who does not even know the God of Israel is chosen to end the Babylonian Exile. God tells Cyrus that besides Him there is no other God).
A reading from the Book of Isaiah

Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and ungird the loins of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed: For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I surname you, though you do not know me. I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I gird you, though you do not know me.
