Vol: 44, No.44 THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY ( A) August 15 2017
INDEPENDENCE DAY (A) (Special Mass for India)
A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon beneath her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. (Rev 12:1)

Today the Church is celebrating the solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady. This dogma was promulgated by Pope Pius XII in 1950. It invites us to reflect on the Christian understanding of death and the reward awaiting the righteous. Mother Mary always lived in the presence of God. Even death could not separate her from God’s presence. In fact it is death that served as a door to enter into the majestic presence of God. Mother Mary always did the will of God in her life and therefore she could be clothed with glory. Let us ask God’s pardon and mercy for the time we have gone away from his presence and being disobedient to him. (Pause)

I confess to almighty God/and to you,/my brothers and sisters,/that I have greatly sinned,/in my thoughts and in my words,/in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,/through my fault,/through my fault,/through my most grievous fault;/therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,/all the Angels and Saints,/and you,/my brothers and sisters,/to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Glory to God in the highest...
Almighty ever-living God, who assumed the Immaculate Virgin Mary, the Mother of your Son, body and soul into heavenly glory, grant, we pray, that, always attentive to the things that are above, we may merit to be sharers of her glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
(Judith was a widow but when she was given special wisdom and grace to save the lives of her people. Judith becomes the pre-figuration of Mother Mary who co-operated with God’s plan to save the world).
A reading from the Book of Judith (13:18-20; 15:9)
And Uzziah said to her, “O daughter, you are blessed by the Most High God above all women on earth; and blessed be the Lord God, who created the heavens and the earth, who has guided you to strike the head of the leader of our enemies. Your hope will never depart from the hearts of men, as they remember the power of God. May God grant this to be a perpetual honour to you, and may he visit you with his blessings, because you did not spare your life when your nation was brought low, but have avenged our ruin, walking in the straight path before our God.” And all the people said, “So be it, so be it!”
