The Lord is the strength of his people, a saving refuge for the one he has anointed. Save your people, Lord, and bless your heritage, and govern them for ever. (Ps 27:8-9)

A famous quotation says that a man who is not afraid is not aggressive, a man who has no sense of fear of any kind is really a free, a peaceful man. But, can we find a man who has no fear at all? Experience teaches us that human beings are frightened of so many things in the physical world such as darkness, reptiles, ferocious animals, overflowing rivers, wild fires, gun battles, street fights, height and depth and so on. But the “do not be afraid” of which Jesus speaks in today’s gospel is about the spiritual realm where fear is not required for we have our Heavenly Father to protect us. Jesus argues that if God cares for the sparrows that are cheapest to buy in a meat market, then how much more would he be caring for his children? What we need to be afraid of is the sin we commit against God because there is the real danger of being isolated if not punished. What am I really afraid of? Do the atrocities committed against fellow human beings really bother me? Does sinning against God’s will really trouble me? (Pause)

(Through these verses Jeremiah gives vent to the bitter feelings of rejection that he experiences. The final verse of this passage expresses Jeremiah’s confidence that God can change the course of events and punish his enemies).
A reading from the Book of Jeremiah

Jeremiah said, “I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side! ‘Denounce him! Let us denounce him!’ say all my familiar friends, watching for my fall. ‘Perhaps he will be deceived, then we can overcome him, and take our revenge on him.’ But the Lord is with me as a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble, they will not overcome me. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal dishonur will never be forgotten. O Lord of hosts, who triest the righteous, who seest the heart and the mind, let me see thy vengeance upon them, for to thee have I committed my cause. Sing to the Lord; praise the Lord! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hand of evildoers.”
