Vol: 44, No.32 ASCENSION OF THE LORD ( A) May 28 2017
Men of Galilee, why gaze in wonder at the heavens? This Jesus whom you saw ascending into heaven will return as you saw him go, alleluia. (Acts 1:11)

The feast of the ascension recalls the glorious return of the Lord Jesus back to his Father. The Scripture teaches us that after Jesus’ death God the Father raised him back to life and made him the Lord of heaven and earth. Luke places the ascension forty days after the resurrection during which Jesus appeared to his disciples strengthening their faith and clearing their doubts. Following the tradition established by Luke, the Church celebrates the feast of the ascension forty days after the resurrection. The endearing words of the Father spoken at the time Jesus’ baptism and transfiguration that he is the beloved Son reach their fulfilment when God the Father raises His Son and bestows on him the glory that belonged to him. What does the ascension mean to us? Does the promise of eternal life motivate us to live better lives? (Pause)

I confess to almighty God/....
Glory to God in the highest...

Gladden us with holy joys, almighty God, and make us rejoice with devout thanksgiving, for the Ascension of Christ your Son is our exaltation, and, where the Head has gone before in glory, the Body is called to follow in hope. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
(The ascension took place forty days after the resurrection during which Jesus appeared to his disciples).
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (1:1-11)
In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “You heard from me, for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.” And when he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
