ENTRANCE ANTIPHON
Be my protector, O God, a mighty stronghold to save me. For you are my rock, my stronghold! Lead me, guide me, for the sake of your name. (Ps 30:3-4)
PENITENTIAL RITE

Did we come to the church today because there is a law which demands us to participate in the Sunday Liturgy? Todayís readings should help us to answer the question negatively and help us to reflect on the use of regulations and freedom to obey them. We should be here not out of compulsion but out of desire to join our fellow brothers and sisters in listening to the Word of God and participating in the Eucharist which nourish our lives. With this sense of freedom and desire let us ask the Lord to forgive our shortcomings and thus prepare ourselves to participate worthily in this celebration of love. (Pause)

I confess to almighty God/and to you,/my brothers and sisters,/that I have greatly sinned,/in my thoughts and in my words,/in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,/through my fault,/through my fault,/through my most grievous fault;/therefore I vask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,/all the Angels and Saints,/and you,/my brothers and sisters,/to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Glory to God in the highest...

that we may be so fashioned by your grace as to become a dwelling pleasing to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
FIRST READING
(Ben Sira vigorously denies that God makes people to sin. Here the author emphasizes the human freedom which is a privilege given by God in the face of good and evil).
A reading from the Book of Sirach (15:15-20)
If you will, you can keep the commandments, and to act faithfully is a matter of your own choice. He has placed before you fire and water; stretch out your hand for whichever you wish. Before a man are life and death, and whichever he chooses will be given to him. For great is the wisdom of the Lord; he is mighty in power and sees everything; his eyes are on those who fear him, and he knows every deed of man. He has not commanded any one to be ungodly, and he has not given any one permission to sin.
