Vol: 44, No.5 CHRISTMAS- MIDNIGHT MASS ( A) December 25 2016
Let us all rejoice in the Lord, for our Saviour has been born in the world. Today, true peace has come down to us from Heaven.

Dear brothers and sisters, we have come together to celebrate the birthday of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus’ mother Mary and foster father Joseph were residents of Nazareth but Jesus was born in Bethlehem which was near Jerusalem because the edict of the Emperor compelled Joseph to travel to Bethlehem which was his ancestral town. Joseph took Mary along on that journey who was advanced in pregnancy. There was also the divine necessity that the Messiah should be born in Bethlehem because there were numerous prophecies about the Messiah’s birth in Bethlehem. When the entire earth was sleeping, heaven became active as the angelic hosts announced the happy event to the shepherds in the field who did as they have been told. They returned with joy in their hearts. Does the birth of Jesus make us joyful and messengers of the Good News? Let us approach the new born child with grateful hearts and ask the graces we need to live happy and joyful lives. (Pause)

I confess to almighty God/and to you,/my brothers and sisters,/that I have greatly sinned,/in my thoughts and in my words,/in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,/through my fault,/through my fault,/through my most grievous fault;/therefore I ask
blessed Mary ever-Virgin,/ all the Angels and Saints,/and you,/my brothers and sisters,/to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Glory to God in the highest...
O God, who have made this most sacred night radiant with the splendour of the true light, grant, we pray, that we, who have known the mysteries of his light on earth, may also delight in his gladness in heaven. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
(In this messianic prophecy Isaiah expresses his certainty that the saving acts of God will certainly happen. A child will be born who will receive royal stamp and titles named Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace).
A reading from the Book of Isaiah (9:1-7)
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased its joy; they rejoice before thee as with joy at the harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, thou hast broken as on the day of Midian. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called “Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty
