The merciful love of the Lord fills the earth; by the word of the Lord the heavens were made, alleluia. (Ps32:5-6)

The modern society is a consumerist one where products are sold through advertisements. If the designers of the advertisement succeed in catching the attention of the prospective buyer then the product will be sold. Experience shows that even bad products can be sold through good advertisements. Paul and Barnabas come to Antioch to publicize the Good News about Jesus Christ who is the fulfilment of the promises that the Jewish people have been awaiting. The initial enthusiasm of the people turns to bitter hostility. Jealousy and a resistance to let go of the old and accept something new and beneficial is the reason for hostility.
